VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela has promised that the next parliamentary term will revitalize the pending media reform package. Abela defended his government’s work, while acknowledging delays and a complex legislative process. The proposed measures—including tougher penalties for attacks on journalists and measures to reduce the cost of defamation lawsuits—would already be in place if the process had continued.
He also emphasized that Malta has nevertheless adopted key elements, including the European Union’s anti-SLAPP rules to protect journalists from abusive lawsuits. Looking ahead, Abela confirmed that the package will be resubmitted, but indicated a shift in strategy toward faster adoption and fewer drawn-out consultations. He added that the government’s legislative agenda will depend on voter support as the country enters the midst of the election campaign.
