MADRID (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) — After coming close to making history, Inigo Perez is leaving. Clearly emotional, the 38-year-old Spanish coach announced that he is stepping down as Rayo Vallecano manager, bringing to an end a two-and-a-half-year spell in which he guided the club from a relegation battle to European competition, culminating in Wednesday’s Conference League final defeat against Crystal Palace.
According to Spanish media reports, Perez is expected to join Villarreal, where he would succeed Marcelino.
“I’m grateful to those who believed in me. I truly appreciate that they backed me when I had no experience as a coach,” Perez said. “I had a strong desire to achieve important goals. We managed to do that by qualifying for Europe and reaching a final. I achieved the objectives I had set for myself, and I feel at peace.”
