Openda suffers fibula fracture, Lyon calls for “player protection”

LYON (FRANCE) (ITALPRESS) – Bad news for Loïs Openda, Lyon and Juventus. The French club has announced that the Belgian striker, who is owned by the Turin-based club and is on loan at Olympique Lyonnais, has suffered “a fracture of the fibula in his right leg and will remain sidelined at least until the next international break.”

The player, who is therefore not expected to return before mid-November and had made an excellent start to the season following a difficult year at Juventus, sustained the injury during Friday evening’s match against Lens, following a heavy sliding tackle by Ganiou.

The club strongly criticised the referee’s handling of the match.

“The injury occurred at the end of a game in which Loïs Openda was repeatedly fouled from the opening minutes, with only one disciplinary sanction issued. Olympique Lyonnais deplores the treatment of its striker and believes that the player was not given the necessary protection, culminating in the collision that now forces him to stay off the pitch.

“More generally, OL reiterates that safeguarding players’ physical integrity must remain an absolute priority and that referees are the primary guarantors of this principle,” the club concluded in its statement.
