VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Yorgen Fenech’s defense
has concluded its closing arguments in the trial for the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Lawyer Charles Mercieca devoted his presentation to challenging the prosecution’s evidence, repeatedly questioning the credibility of the main witness, Melvin Theuma, the man who admitted to acting as an intermediary in the murder.
Mercieca also attempted to shift the focus onto former government chief of staff Keith Schembri, suggesting he may have had a motive to kill Caruana Galizia. Mercieca also questioned the investigation into the possible involvement of other individuals, arguing that police investigative shortcomings included the failure to recover the laptop of former government cabinet chief Keith Schembri after the alleged loss of his phone, suggesting he may have had a motive to kill the journalist.
A tense moment occurred when the lawyer raised the issue of Caruana Galizia’s laptop, which the family had handed over to German authorities rather than Maltese authorities due to data security concerns. His remarks provoked a reaction from the journalist’s family members present in the courtroom.
Mercieca also rejected the prosecution’s argument that Caruana Galizia was killed for information she could have uncovered about the Electrogas deal involving Fenech. Finally, he urged the jurors to focus on whether the evidence allows them to be certain of Fenech’s guilt.
