Malta: activists call for and end to the silence surrounding the murder of Caruana Galizia

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A vigil was held in Valletta last night, calling for an end to the silence and demanding justice, nine years after the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

According to Maltese media, Italian activists were also present at the event. Francesca Rispoli, representing the anti-mafia association Libera, stated that the journalist’s murder failed to silence those who continue to demand justice and accountability. “We are the noise they didn’t want,” Rispoli declared, noting that criminal organizations often leverage legal systems and economic interests to expand their influence—frequently favoring business dealings over violence, as bombs “make noise” and draw unwanted attention.

According to Rispoli, 11 journalists have been killed by the mafia in Italy. Each year, Libera honors the innocent victims of organized crime; they have included Caruana Galizia among those commemorated, alongside other murdered journalists such as Anna Politkovskaya, Ján Kuciak, and Martina Kušnírová.

The vigil took place as part of a day of commemorations for Caruana Galizia, who was killed on October 16, 2017, when a car bomb exploded outside her home in Bidnija.
