VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Malta Planning Authority has issued an Emergency Conservation Order (ECO) for a site in Xaghra, on the island of Gozo, at the request of the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage (SCH). Archaeological investigations have uncovered human remains, prehistoric pottery, and intact vessels dating back to the Zebbug phase, approximately dated between 4100 and 3800 BC.
According to the Planning Authority, the finds indicate the presence of a prehistoric cemetery consisting of at least eight tombs. The site is one of the most significant discoveries related to this early phase of Maltese prehistory.
The Zebbug phase is considered the oldest of the Temples of Malta period and predates the construction of the megalithic temples of the archipelago. Authorities emphasize that evidence from this period is relatively rare, giving the site considerable scientific interest and significant research potential.
The discovery of intact archaeological deposits could provide new insights into Malta’s earliest prehistoric communities and their funerary practices.
