ROME (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Algeria has updated its national biodiversity strategy for the 2025–2030 period, establishing 24 national targets and 93 implementation actions. This was announced by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on October 16, while speaking in Yerevan, Armenia, at the leaders’ summit of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17). In his address, Tebboune noted that over 27,000 living species have been documented in Algeria, including approximately 8,500 plant species and 18,000 animal species.
The national network of protected areas consists of 24 designated sites, encompassing marine, forest, mountain, steppe, and desert ecosystems. The President also highlighted the role of cultural parks in preserving biological, archaeological, and historical heritage, noting that the total area of national conservation zones has been expanded by approximately one million square kilometers. Tebboune reiterated the need to strengthen international cooperation by ensuring that developing countries receive adequate funding, technology transfer, and capacity-building support to achieve global biodiversity goals.
