ZURICH (SWITZERLAND) (ITALPRESS) – FIFA has sanctioned the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following discriminatory chants directed at Muslims during a friendly match against Egypt, held on March 31 at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona. Taking into account several mitigating factors—notably that an anti-discrimination message was promptly displayed on the stadium’s big screen, and that both the Federation and head coach Luis de la Fuente subsequently condemned the incident—FIFA has ordered Spain to leave 15% of the seats empty for its next home friendly match.
Alternatively, these seats may be allocated to families, students, and organizations dedicated to the fight against discrimination. The RFEF has also been fined 20,000 US dollars (approximately 17,200 euros). The earliest opportunity to serve this sanction is during the international window in June 2027, unless the Spanish national team qualifies for the UEFA Nations League Final Four; in that event, the measure will be applied the following autumn.
