VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela has said Malta will continue to defend its national interests in negotiations over the European Union’s long-term budget for 2028–2034, highlighting the importance of protecting funding for cohesion, agriculture and fisheries.
Speaking at the European Council summit in Brussels, Abela stated: “From Malta’s perspective, the negotiations are particularly significant because of the country’s geographical limitations, small domestic market and reliance on international connectivity.” Abela has stressed that cohesion funding must not be undermined, pointing to its contribution to Malta’s economic and social development.
The Prime Minister has also emphasised the importance of affordable energy, reliable transport links and resilient infrastructure, arguing that these are essential requirements for an island state. For Malta, the challenge will be to secure sufficient funding while contributing to wider European objectives and responding to emerging economic and geopolitical pressures.
