VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech has been acquitted of all charges over the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, after a jury found him not guilty by an 8-1 majority on both counts.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday evening following around eight hours of deliberations by the nine jurors. Fenech had been facing charges of complicity in the voluntary homicide of Caruana Galizia and association with one or more persons for the purpose of committing a crime in Malta.
The jury retired shortly after 11am, following a three-day address by Judge Edwina Grima. Caruana Galizia was killed on 16 October 2017 when a bomb planted in her car exploded in Bidnija. The prosecution had argued that Fenech was the mastermind behind the assassination, alleging that he ordered the killing.
