TRIPOLI (LIBYA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Libyan parties signed today in Tripoli, at the headquarters of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the final agreement of the 4+4 roundtable, which defines the electoral framework and the reconstitution of the Electoral Commission Council, as part of the first two phases of the UN-backed roadmap.
During the ceremony, UN Special Envoy Hanna Tetteh stated that the agreement represents an important step, and emphasized that the priority now is timely implementation and maintaining momentum to complete the remaining phases of the roadmap.
Tetteh explained that the goal is to create the conditions for elections within a defined and non-extendable timeframe, and that elections are part of the political process, along with strengthening institutions and managing economic reforms and basic services.
The UN mission recalled that the closed round table brought together the key Libyan executive and legislative bodies capable of influencing the political process, after eight months of limited progress by the two parliaments.
