ROME (ITALPRESS) – A staunch opponent of Gianni Infantino, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has announced he will not run against the current FIFA president in next March’s elections. The 58-year-old Slovenian official, who has led European football’s governing body since 2016, said he was “not interested” in the FIFA presidency, adding that he loves UEFA and the work he does within it, despite his term expiring in 2027, and that his “credibility” as an opponent of Infantino “is much more important” if he is not interested in the position.
The announcement of his plan, later abandoned, to privatize the World Cup caused Infantino to suffer a significant loss of support. The organization led by Aleksander Čeferin continues to threaten a boycott of all FIFA competitions, despite withdrawing the plan.
The two have not spoken since the beginning of this crisis, and with the 2027 elections in sight, Ceferin is considering two scenarios: “The first option is that he realizes he doesn’t have the support” needed for his re-election; the other is that “he runs in the elections, but in that case I think we’ll have a rival candidate. I don’t know who yet.”
Several media outlets are speculating that the opposition presidential candidate could be Canadian Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF.
