ZURICH (SWITZERLAND) (ITALPRESS) – The FIFA hammer has come down hard on Argentina. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has examined a series of incidents involving the Albiceleste during the last World Cup and has handed down severe sanctions.
The punishment includes a hefty fine of nearly 275,000 euros for several violations, starting with Article 13, which regulates the use of sporting events “to stage demonstrations of a non-sporting nature.” The reference is to the banner featuring the Falkland Islands displayed after Argentina’s semi-final victory over England. The charges also include violations of Articles 14 (“improper conduct of a team”), 15 (discriminatory chants and gestures by Argentine fans) and 17 (order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
In addition, Argentina will have to play its next two home matches — one of which is suspended — at 50% stadium capacity.
FIFA also came down hard over the brawl that broke out after the final defeat to Spain, handing Leandro Paredes a 10-match suspension and Nahuel Molina a seven-match ban, along with a €77,000 fine for each player.
The former Roma and Juventus midfielder grabbed Eric Garcia by the neck and then pushed Gavi to the ground as the Barcelona player intervened to protect his teammate. Molina, meanwhile, was involved in a confrontation with Rodri.
Thiago Almada has been suspended for one match, while Roberto Ayala, a member of Lionel Scaloni’s coaching staff, has been handed a three-match ban. One Spanish player was also punished: Gavi, who has received a one-match suspension.
Almada, Ayala and Gavi have also each been fined €25,700.
