World Cup, AFC “Iran’s participation is currently confirmed”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed today that it has not received any communication from Iran regarding its national team’s possible withdrawal from the World Cup due to the ongoing conflict in the Gulf. This fact clashes with statements made last week, starting with the words of Sports Minister Ahmad Donjamali (“There are no conditions for participation”) and US President Donald Trump (“Iran is welcome, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for them to participate”).

“This is a very delicate moment; there have been many reactions,” AFC Secretary General Windsor John emphasized in Kuala Lumpur. “Ultimately, it’s up to the federation to decide on their participation, and to date, they have confirmed their participation in the World Cup. They are members of our federation, we want to see them play, they have qualified… So we hope they resolve their problems, whatever they may be, and can participate.” If Iran were to play in the 2026 World Cup, which begins on June 11, it would play its three group matches in the United States, two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
