MADRID (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – The alleged incident of racism that occurred during the first leg of the Champions League play-offs between Benfica and Real Madrid at the Da Luz stadium in Lisbon continues to spark discussion. This time, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany spoke out in English at the pre-match press conference for tomorrow’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt, scheduled for 3:30 PM.
He defended Vinicius, but also harshly criticized Jose Mourinho‘s comments. “He says Benfica can’t be racist because their greatest player of all time was Eusébio. Do you know what the players went through in the 1960s?” the Belgian said, also stating that “it’s not right to use his name to discredit Vinicius.”
After this initial attack, there is a desire to restore peace. “I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about José. I understand he fights for his club, but he made a mistake. I hope it doesn’t happen again,” Kompany concluded, after stating at the start of the press conference that “what happened off the pitch is even more serious than what happened on it.”
