Turkish referee betting scandal, clubs and players also under investigation

ISTANBUL (TURKEY) (ITALPRESS) – Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, president of the Turkish Football Federation, announced in a press conference that “371 of the 571 referees active in professional leagues have a betting account. And of these, 152 are actively betting.” Specifically, “10 referees have placed over 10,000 bets, one has placed 18,227 bets alone, 42 referees have placed bets on over 1,000 football matches individually, and some referees have placed bets on a single match.”

But according to “Haberturk,” there are some developments. The Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office, which launched its criminal investigation in April, is reportedly examining data from the last five years, and the investigation is also expected to involve clubs across all categories, from the lower leagues to the Super Lig. 3,700 players are already under scrutiny, but the number could grow further. Istanbul is also awaiting the conclusions of the Federation’s investigation, and based on the new information, summons and arrests could be issued soon.
