Trial for the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta, Fenech: “Former prime minister Muscat and two others knew of the plans”

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The trial into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia continued today in Valletta, with a new hearing centering on the 2019 police interrogation of businessman Yorgen Fenech.

The recording, acquired as evidence and shown during the hearing, reiterated Fenech’s accusations against Keith Schembri, former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s chief of staff. And Muscat’s name was specifically brought up by the businessman, because, in his view, the former prime minister “knew” of the alleged plans to kill the journalist.

According to Fenech, Muscat was “one of three people” who knew “100%” of Schembri’s alleged involvement, along with businessman Johann Cremona and doctor Adrian Vella. In another part of the recording, Fenech claimed that Schembri had wanted to “get rid” of Caruana Galizia for years “because of her articles about him.”

According to Fenech, an initial plan, which later failed, involved paying €30,000 to hitmen. Subsequently, Melvin Theuma, identified in the trial as the “intermediary” with the perpetrators, allegedly found other hitmen, who, however, demanded a payment of €120,000. Theuma, according to Fenech’s testimony to the police, immediately informed Schembri, who in turn responded to “proceed.”

Investigators repeatedly disputed Fenech’s version of events. Inspector Kurt Zahra warned the jury about the content of Fenech’s questioning, emphasizing that the businessman had “repeatedly tried to direct investigators” to topics “he wanted to discuss.”
