VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta recorded the second-highest increase in commercial flights among EU countries in August compared with the same month last year, according to Eurostat data.
The number of commercial flights to and from Malta rose by 12% year-on-year, placing the country behind Slovakia, which recorded a 37% increase.
Estonia followed Malta with an 8% rise in flight numbers.
Eight EU countries registered declines in commercial flights during the month. Austria recorded the largest decrease at 4.7%, followed by Cyprus at 3% and Germany at 2.4%.
Across the EU, commercial flights increased by around 2% compared with August 2025.
The latest figures continue a trend of stronger flight activity during the summer, with every month from June to August recording notable year-on-year increases.
Eurostat defines commercial flights as those carrying passengers, cargo or mail.
The increase in air traffic comes as Malta also recorded strong growth in tourist arrivals.
Recent figures from the National Statistics Office show that tourist numbers rose by around 12% in August compared with the same month in 2024.
The growth in visitor numbers has, however, been accompanied by an ongoing debate over whether tourists are spending more during their stay in Malta.
