Malta issues red heat alert as Europe swelters

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has issued a red weather warning as temperatures are expected to reach between 34°C and 35°C in the coming days, with the alert remaining in force until 30 June.

The Meteorological Office at Malta International Airport said the hot weather is set to persist, prompting authorities to urge residents and visitors to take precautions against the extreme heat.

People are being advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, stay in cool environments and drink water regularly to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

UV radiation levels are also forecast to remain exceptionally high throughout the week, with the UV Index expected to range between 10 and 11+, levels classified as very high to extreme.

Health authorities recommend avoiding direct sun exposure between 11am and 4pm, applying high-factor sunscreen, wearing hats and seeking shade whenever possible.

Particular attention is being directed towards children, elderly people and other vulnerable groups, who face a greater risk of heat-related health complications.
