Italy’s Ambassador to Morocco highlights culture as cornerstone of bilateral relations

RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – Italy’s Ambassador to Morocco, Pasquale Salzano, delivered the opening address this evening in Rabat at the concert “Sounds for Morocco”, a cultural diplomacy event organised by the World Youth Orchestra Foundation.

In his remarks, delivered just hours after presenting his Letters of Credence to King Mohammed VI, Ambassador Salzano highlighted the profound symbolic significance of the event, which marks the official beginning of his diplomatic mission in Morocco.

“This evening holds special meaning for me. Today, I had the honour of presenting my Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Being here with you, united by music, poetry, and dialogue between our cultures, gives this day even deeper significance,” the ambassador said.

Salzano emphasised the importance of cultural dialogue between Italy and Morocco, two countries connected by “deep relations, a long history of exchange, and a shared openness to the Mediterranean region.”

The concert brings together the works of Telemann and Mozart with sounds drawn from Moroccan and Mediterranean musical traditions. It features young musicians conducted by Maestro Damiano Giuranna and Moroccan musician Khnnous Mohcine. Musical performances are accompanied by Valeria Almerighi, who will recite works by Dante Alighieri alongside poetry by Mohammed Bennis and Abdellatif Laabi.

The ambassador also expressed particular appreciation for the World Youth Orchestra Foundation, which has been active for more than 25 years in music education and cultural diplomacy, as well as the CDP Foundation, which supports the initiative.

“I am especially moved by the central role given to young people in this project,” Salzano added, acknowledging the student musicians of INSMAC and the student actors of ISADAC performing on stage. “At a time when younger generations are often confronted with withdrawal and isolation, initiatives like this demonstrate how encounter, shared learning, and curiosity about others can become a powerful force.”

Concluding his speech, Salzano invited the audience to be carried away by music and poetry, stressing that “culture is not merely an accompaniment to relations between countries, but one of their deepest and most enduring expressions,” and that the Mediterranean can once again become “a space for dialogue, creativity, and mutual understanding.”

The concert is being held with the essential support of the Italian Cultural Institute in Rabat.
