Tunisia, Saied: “Past educational reforms were the result of external impositions”

TUNIS (TUNISIA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Tunisian President Kais Saied has criticized previous reforms to the education system, arguing that they did not reflect the popular will but were instead the result of external impositions. He expressed this view during a meeting held on November 6 at the Carthage Palace with the Minister of Education—who also serves as President of the Higher Council for Education and Training—Noureddine Nouri, and the Council’s Secretary-General, Mohamed Ali Boughdiri.

During the meeting, Saied emphasized the role of this constitutional institution in shaping society, asserting that there can be no future for new generations without a national, democratic education system that is accessible to everyone, in every part of the country. The President also referenced the past policy of “draining the sources” [of thought], arguing that it contributed to stifling critical thinking—a phenomenon he believes persists today, exacerbated by the growing influence of social media and the risks of intellectual manipulation.

Saied called for the identification of new methods to develop the education system and for the organization of regular meetings to exchange ideas and proposals, while avoiding past errors and political maneuvering. He further stressed that any foreign models considered for inspiration should only be adopted after listening to Tunisian citizens, who are capable of developing solutions and approaches that could also prove useful to other nations. Particular attention was given to students living in the most remote areas.

The President highlighted the need to ensure the availability of school transportation and to provide all necessary materials for students to continue their education, reiterating that education is a right that must be guaranteed to all on an equal basis, free from any discrimination.
