Tunisia, Saied aims to support small-scale olive growers

TUNIS (TUNISIA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Tunisian President Kais Saied has called for the adoption of the necessary measures to ensure the success of the olive harvesting and processing season, with particular emphasis on supporting small-scale farmers.

The directives were issued during a meeting held yesterday at the Presidential Palace in Carthage with the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, according to the Tunisian presidency.

Saied stressed the need to facilitate small producers’ access to credit, establish new financing schemes and set a benchmark price to protect their interests. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening the storage capacity of the National Oil Office, promoting Tunisian olive oil in foreign markets and encouraging local packaging in order to increase its added value and competitiveness.

During the meeting, the president also called for intensified preventive measures against diseases affecting olive trees and for efforts to contain the risk of the red palm weevil spreading in certain regions. He urged regional agricultural directorates to take more decisive action.
