VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Armed Forces of Malta has deployed army personnel in Swieqi to work alongside the Police, strengthening the security presence in the locality during the night.
Swieqi is located very close to Paceville, Malta’s Mecca of nightlife, where large numbers of people gather at night. The area has also faced concerns linked to antisocial behaviour and the conduct of some tourists and visitors, particularly during late-night hours.
Swieqi Deputy Mayor Galea Pace said the deployment followed months of calls from the Local Council and residents for increased security measures.
He said the initiative was another step towards making Swieqi a place where residents feel safe and can live peacefully in their homes.
Galea Pace said the increased presence of Police and army personnel sent a clear message that antisocial behaviour in residential areas would not be ignored.
He also called for neighbouring localities to adopt a similar approach, arguing that security problems do not stop at Swieqi’s borders.
“Residents deserve to feel safe in their neighbourhood and, above all, they deserve to be able to sleep peacefully in their own homes,” he said.
Galea Pace thanked the Police and the Armed Forces of Malta for their cooperation and commitment on the ground.
He described the deployment as another step forward, while stressing that the Local Council’s work would continue.
