VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Non-European workers already residing in Malta can now enrol in a new course on Maltese language and culture as part of efforts to improve integration and workforce stability.
The initiative targets third-country nationals seeking to renew their work permits and encourages employers to invest in existing staff rather than recruit new workers from abroad.
Participants will be required to attend classes and pass a final examination administered by the government’s examinations department. Successful candidates will qualify for longer work permit renewals, provided they hold employment contracts covering the extended period.
The course, developed by the Home Affairs Ministry, will be delivered by licensed educational institutions across Malta. In addition to language training in Maltese and English, the programme includes modules on local culture, traditions, civic participation, legal awareness, and personal and professional development.
The policy also extends to workers who complete significant training, such as SEC examinations or professional development courses, making them eligible for longer permit renewals.
Low-skilled workers who complete the course may obtain two-year permits instead of the standard one-year renewal. Higher-skilled workers may also receive two-year extensions based on training, while specialised schemes allow for renewals of up to three years.
The measure forms part of Malta’s broader Labour Migration Policy. Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said foreign workers have an obligation to adapt to Maltese society.
