Malta condemns Iran crackdown, voices solidarity with protesters

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has condemned “without reservation” the oppression and killing of thousands of Iranians amid ongoing anti-government protests, expressing solidarity with the Iranian people.

In a statement, Parliament’s Standing Committee on Foreign and European Affairs voiced deep concern over the situation, warning that the violence could “lead to an escalation of tensions in the region”.

The committee said Iranians “have the right to aspire to live in peace, democracy and freedom, with full respect for fundamental human rights”.

The condemnation follows reports from a US-based rights group confirming more than 5,000 deaths since protests erupted across Iran, with most victims described as demonstrators targeted by security forces.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency said at least 26,852 people have been arrested, adding that a two-week internet shutdown has hampered efforts to verify the true scale of the toll.

Iranian authorities have put the death toll at 3,117, while denying claims by the United States that executions of protesters were halted following external pressure.

Rights groups continue to warn that detained demonstrators face the risk of capital charges, underscoring international concern echoed by Malta’s statement.
