VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Volcanic ash from Mount Etna disrupted flights between Malta and Catania on Saturday after all arriving flights at Catania’s Bellini Airport were suspended. The airport said arrivals would remain suspended as ash from Etna’s latest eruption affected the airspace over eastern Sicily. The airspace covering the volcanic ash cloud, designated Sector C1, was closed because of the eruption, the airport said.
Departures by aircraft already at Catania were continuing normally. The disruption has already affected at least two flights from Malta.A 6.45am KM Malta Airlines flight from Malta International Airport to Catania was cancelled, while a 7.50am Ryanair flight was diverted to Palermo. Several other Malta-Catania flights were scheduled to operate later on Saturday.
Passengers were urged to check with their airline for the latest flight information before travelling to the airport. Etna erupted overnight between Thursday and Friday, with activity intensifying at the Voragine crater. The latest eruption has once again highlighted the impact of Etna’s volcanic activity on air travel in the region.
