Malta supports Italy’s stance at Brussels Summit, urges calm in Europe

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The European leaders’ emergency summit concluded shortly after midnight, with Malta emphasizing a measured approach amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Prime Minister Robert Abela told the national television broadcaster that Malta’s position during the summit reflected the intervention made by Italy. He stressed that the European Union must act to de-escalate tensions rather than inflame them.

Abela warned that the coming weeks could be particularly sensitive. He called on European leaders to choose their words and actions carefully, noting that the world is closely watching an unprecedented geopolitical situation.

The summit also addressed the Peace Board recently set up by U.S. President Donald Trump. While acknowledging differing views among leaders, Abela encouraged others to see the Board as a potential point of convergence rather than division.

“Although informal, the summit was immensely important,” Abela said. “I left feeling more confident than when I entered, seeing a sense of pragmatism among participants.”

He highlighted potential escalations in the coming weeks over issues such as Greenland. “My role is to seek convergence, not to raise tensions,” he said.

Abela underlined the importance of President Trump retracting his statements regarding tariffs that could have increased costs for citizens opposing his Greenland proposal.

He added that talks are expected between Denmark and the United States, with NATO likely to play a role in finding solutions. To date, Denmark has not identified a permanent solution.

The Peace Board also sparked skepticism among leaders, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who ruled out cooperation, and European Council President António Costa, who raised governance concerns.

“There are technical points where agreement is lacking, but if we can converge on the Board’s constitution, it could serve as a bridge rather than widen divisions,” Abela said.
