Western Sahara, Portugal Considers Autonomy the most Serious Basis

LISBON (PORTUGAL) (ITALPRESS) – As Map Agency reports, Portugal today expressed its “full support” for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara, calling it “the most serious, credible, and constructive basis” for resolving the dispute. This is stated in the joint statement signed in Lisbon by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel, following a bilateral meeting.

Portugal recognized the importance of the issue for Morocco and the Kingdom’s “serious and credible” efforts within the UN framework to achieve a political, just, lasting, and acceptable solution for all parties. The two ministers also reaffirmed their support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which encourages a realistic, pragmatic, and compromise-based solution. With this position, Lisbon aligns itself with the growing international consensus surrounding Morocco’s autonomy plan, the statement emphasizes.
