The Trump Administration Sanctions an Algerian Pro-Hamas Association

WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – In the United States, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Treasury Department announced, in a statement released on Tuesday, June 10, sanctions against five individuals and five foreign-based charitable organizations accused of financing Hamas’s military wing and its terrorist activities. According to the Moroccan website Yabiladi, among these entities is an Algerian NGO, El Baraka.

The Algerian charitable and humanitarian organization El Baraka diverted funds intended for humanitarian causes to support Hamas. As president of El Baraka, Ahmed Brahimi (Brahimi) ensured that funds raised by the organization—some of which came from unsuspecting donors who believed they were helping Palestinian civilians—were instead diverted for the benefit of Hamas,” the Treasury Department stated. “From now on, all assets and interests of the El Baraka Association and its president are frozen and must be reported to OFAC.”

The Algerian association El Baraka is very active in the Tindouf camps. Under the pretext of humanitarian programmes for the “Sahrawi refugees,” representatives of the NGO frequently visit the Polisario Front. The sanctions against El Baraka and its president, imposed by the Trump administration, coincide with the European Union’s announcement that Algeria has been added to the list of high-risk countries for money laundering.
