Sahara, Ecuador Considers Autonomy the Only Credible Solution

RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – The Republic of Ecuador today reaffirmed its support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, calling it the only serious, credible, and realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. This was reported by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, specifying that this position was expressed in the Joint Communiqué signed in Rabat at the end of talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, during a working visit to the Kingdom. Quito also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), reaffirming that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most viable solution to end the regional dispute.

According to the statement from Rabat, the two countries also renewed their support for the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara and for efforts to advance the political process toward a definitive resolution to the dispute. The Joint Communiqué also emphasizes Ecuador’s decision to extend its consular presence to the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with international law. Likewise, Quito expressed its willingness to promote economic and trade cooperation opportunities in the Moroccan Sahara, opening promising prospects for the African continent for the benefit of its economic sectors and strengthening exchanges in terms of investment, trade, and productive development. Finally, the Ecuadorian minister announced that the Ecuadorian ambassador in Rabat will soon visit the Sahara region to prepare and support several economic initiatives.
