LONDON (UNITED KINGDOM) (ITALPRESS) – The Premier League has admitted an error over Erling Haaland’s decisive goal in the derby between Manchester United and Manchester City.
Pro Ref, the body responsible for refereeing in England’s top flight, acknowledged a “judgement error” in awarding the goal that gave Enzo Maresca’s side the victory.
The incident occurred in the 60th minute, when Haaland converted Josko Gvardiol’s cross. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR determined that the Norwegian striker was kept onside by Patrick Dorgu’s foot and advised referee Michael Oliver to award the goal.
The main controversy, however, centred on the position of Enzo Fernandez, who was offside and attempted to play the ball in the middle of the penalty area, although he failed to make contact with it.
Pro Ref explained: “It was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore any offside becomes a subjective judgement. However, on this occasion, VAR failed to recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.”
The body also said it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge what it considers “a judgement error” and that “an investigation into the incident will be launched.”
The decision left the Red Devils puzzled. Defender Lisandro Martinez described it as “an injustice”, while manager Michael Carrick said he was “confused”.
The incident came at the end of a match already marred by controversy following Phil Foden’s straight red card in the 23rd minute for a kick on Bruno Fernandes.
Haaland’s goal therefore stands and decided the derby, but the Premier League has now acknowledged that the incident should have been subjected to a further review by the referee.
