LISBON (PORTUGAL) (ITALPRESS) – With or without José Mourinho next season? On paper, there are no doubts: the Benfica coach for 2026/2027 will still be “the Special One.” However, according to the newspaper A Bola, there is a situation to watch that could change things.
The Portuguese coach has already made it clear that he intends to stay and would even sign a lifetime contract with the “Eagles.” Meanwhile, president Manuel Rui Costa has simply noted that there is no issue, since Mourinho still has one year left on his current deal.
Therefore, there is no rush and no desire to discuss a renewal—something Mourinho would instead welcome, possibly under different terms than his current contract.
Benfica are currently third with 69 points from 29 matches, two points behind Sporting (71 from 28) and seven behind leaders Porto, coached by Francesco Farioli, who have 76 points from 29 games. The risk, therefore, is missing out on Champions League qualification (with second place granting access to the play-offs).
Rui Costa is taking his time, and Mourinho remains under contract for next season, but according to A Bola, there are no certainties about the future of “the Special One,” who, without a renewal, could also consider new opportunities.
