MEXICO CITY (MEXICO) (ITALPRESS) – Guillermo Ochoa, like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, made history by coming on in the 33rd minute of the second half of the match between the Czech Republic and Mexico: his sixth career World Cup, equal to only the other two stars. Currently Rangel’s backup, Ochoa—who, however, never played in 2006 and 2010—was greeted by a roar at the Estadio Azteca.
“When I came on, many years and many stories flashed before my eyes,” Ochoa, who spent most of his career in goal for Club America, confessed after the match. “My first game here in goal, the trophies I’ve won here. I’m simply grateful to the fans, my teammates, and my coach for allowing me to experience this moment.”
With the match now over and first place in the group secured, coach Javier Aguirre couldn’t help but say: “He deserves everything that’s happening to him. I didn’t know how much he’d play, but he knew he had to. I wanted Mexico to enjoy the legend of Memo Ochoa.” He also became the oldest player from the home team to play in a World Cup, surpassing the previous record set by Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who played at 37 in 2010.
