Maltese woman marries in Palermo ICU amid critical illness

PALERMO (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A Maltese woman battling a critical illness has married her husband in the intensive care unit of a Palermo hospital. The Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT) said the patient, identified only as Maria, was flown to Sicily by helicopter weeks ago for specialised treatment for severe myocarditis under a Malta–Italy healthcare agreement.

Although the couple had already married in a civil ceremony, the “profoundly religious” Maria wished to mark the union with a Catholic rite. Her husband was determined to fulfil her wish “as a gesture of love and hope during such a delicate time,” the hospital said.
ISMETT staff organised the ceremony inside the intensive therapy ward, maintaining strict safety measures. Maria’s family and parish priest travelled from Malta for the intimate occasion, which was marked by “tears, smiles and deep emotion.”
