VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A large majority of Maltese citizens view the national economy positively, but many remain concerned about their ability to afford essential expenses in the coming year, according to a new Eurobarometer survey.
The study, conducted in late March among 501 respondents, found that 76% believe Malta’s economy is performing well, the second-highest rate in the European Union after Luxembourg and significantly above the EU average of 24%.
Personal finances also received strong ratings, with 73% describing their own economic situation as good. Meanwhile, 68% expect Malta’s economy to improve over the next year, while only 9% anticipate a decline.
Confidence in Malta’s future competitiveness remains high, with 84% expressing faith in the country’s ability to compete globally. Seven in ten respondents also believe their children will enjoy a higher standard of living than they do.
Despite this optimism, concerns about household finances persist. Around one-third fear they may struggle to pay utility bills (31%) or housing costs (32%) over the next 12 months, while 37% are worried about covering healthcare expenses.
Others expressed concerns about affording holidays, household appliances and leisure activities.
Unemployment emerged as a key worry, with 17% identifying it as their main economic concern, nearly double the EU average. Wealth inequality and a potential decline in living standards were also cited among top concerns.
By contrast, only 13% of Maltese said global political uncertainty was their biggest economic worry, the joint-lowest rate in the EU and well below the European average.
