VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has called for stronger international action to protect children caught in armed conflicts, with Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Fearne saying 14,200 children were killed in wars and conflicts in 2025.
Fearne made the appeal after chairing a United Nations meeting in New York focused on children affected by war.
“Behind every number lies a face, a family, a dream, and a stolen future,” he said, stressing that protecting children was a responsibility even when wars could not be stopped.
Fearne, a former paediatric surgeon, said Malta would continue to speak out for children affected by conflict.
Prime Minister Robert Abela separately called for an end to the suffering in Gaza, saying Malta could not tolerate the humanitarian crisis.
Speaking on radio, Abela said civilians and children were enduring “the worst pain imaginable”, amid shortages of food and water.
“There is only one solution: Peace,” he said, while acknowledging the difficulty of achieving it.
Abela said disagreements between the parties continued to hinder efforts towards a two-state solution.
His comments followed his address to the 81st UN General Assembly, where he called for an end to settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank.
He said Malta remained committed to a negotiated two-state solution and supported the Gaza Peace Plan as a route towards ending the conflict and opening the way for political progress.
