VALLETTA (MALTA)(ITALPRESS/MNA) – Protests have erupted in Malta and various European cities following the acquittal of Yorgen Fenech—accused of masterminding the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed by a car bomb in October 2017—with Maltese communities abroad demanding justice and accountability.
In London, around 130 people attended a vigil on Sunday outside Malta House; organized by Jenny Oakley, the event saw Maltese citizens and press freedom supporters displaying photographs of the journalist and holding signs calling for justice.
“Malta must unite against corruption,” said Oakley, expressing concerns about the safety of journalists in the country following the verdict. The demonstration also served to commemorate other instances of political violence, including the unsolved 1977 murder of Karin Grech.
Meanwhile, Maltese residents in the Netherlands are set to gather outside the Maltese Embassy in The Hague, while in Malta, various NGOs will participate in a national demonstration organized by Repubblika in Valletta on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The organizers of the events in the Netherlands—Nathan Portelli, Justin Elull, and Emma Grima—expressed shock and anger, reiterating their determination to continue demanding “truth, justice, and accountability.”
The protests aim to show solidarity with Caruana Galizia’s family, journalists, and activists, while bringing issues of corruption, press freedom, and impunity back to the forefront of public debate. “Justice for Daphne. Justice for Malta,” the Dutch organizers declared.
