Malta, Metsola Votes in PN Leadership Election but Stays Neutral

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – European Parliament President Roberta Metsola cast her ballot in the Nationalist Party’s leadership election but declined to reveal who she was supporting. “I did my job,” she told reporters outside the PN headquarters in Pietà.

Metsola, long seen as a possible successor to outgoing leader Bernard Grech, ruled herself out of the contest earlier this summer, saying her role in Brussels carried too much responsibility. Her decision left the race between MP Alex Borg and former leader Adrian Delia.

Both candidates mingled with members as early voting opened, shaking hands and appealing to voters ahead of the September 6 election. Borg, 30, has promised “generational change,” while Delia has pitched a renewed focus on party structures.

Dozens of PN members lined up to vote at the party’s headquarters, with most preferring to keep their choice private. One voter said she hoped for “a strong leader, not just for the party but for the whole country. A strong opposition makes a strong democracy.”

About 20,600 PN members, known as tesserati, are eligible to cast their vote. Early voting continues Saturday, with the final round on election day at PN clubs across Malta and Gozo.

Grech, whose resignation in June triggered the leadership contest, was absent on Wednesday as he is abroad.
