VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Polling stations opened this morning at 7:00 a.m. in Malta and Gozo for the early elections called by Prime Minister Robert Abela, with over 341,000 voters expected to decide whether the Labour Party will win a fourth consecutive term. Voting will continue until 10:00 p.m., with counting starting tomorrow morning.
Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg was the first politician to vote, going to the polls at 9:00 a.m. in Munxar, Gozo, accompanied by Electoral Commissioner Salvu Sant and welcomed by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, who subsequently cast her vote in Tas-Sliema.
“I urge everyone to vote to give Malta a fresh start,” Borg said after casting his vote. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola urged people to exercise their right and vote. “This is an important day for the country,” she said. Prime Minister Robert Abela cast his ballot shortly after 10 a.m. in Zejtun, along with his wife, Lydia.
In a social media post, he said that voters “hold an important key in their hands” and deserve a voice in the country’s leadership. Around noon, Malta’s President, Myriam Spiteri Debono, arrived at her designated polling station in Birkirkara.
Turnout at 2 p.m. stood at 43.59%, up from 40.45% at the same time in 2022. This figure does not include early voting, which is reserved for police, election officials, and hospitalized patients.
There are 162 candidates in the running, including eight representatives of the ADPD, seven from Ahwa Maltin, one candidate for Imperium Europa, seven for Momentum, 72 candidates representing the Labour Party, 65 for the Nationalist Party, and two independent candidates.
