Lionel Messi buys a fifth-division Barcelona club

BARCELONA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – The bond between Lionel Messi and Barcelona remains stronger than ever. The former Blaugrana champion has acquired Unió Esportiva Cornellà, a historic Catalan club currently playing in the Tercera Division—Spain’s fifth division—and battling for promotion.

“With this transaction, Messi strengthens his close ties with Barcelona and his commitment to developing the sport and local talent in Catalonia. A bond that dates back to his time as a Barcelona player and has remained indelible over the years,” reads a statement from the club, which with Messi’s arrival “opens a new chapter in its history. The project envisions a long-term vision, with a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and rootedness.”

What attracted Messi was the great attention that the Catalan club has always placed on its youth sector: players such as David Raya, now at Arsenal, Jordi Alba, Gerard Martin, Espanyol captain Javi Puado and former Lazio and Inter player Keita Baldé have passed through the UE Cornellà youth system.
