VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Interconnect Malta has received four submissions for a proposed project to generate renewable energy in North Africa and transmit it to Malta through an interconnector.
The submissions were made as part of a Preliminary Market Consultation (PMC), launched to assess market readiness and investor interest in developing renewable energy projects in North Africa directly connected to Malta.
Interconnect Malta said the proposals came from consortia and groups involving established local and international companies with experience in energy, infrastructure, engineering and project development.
The next stage will involve a detailed assessment of the technical and financial information submitted to determine the initiative’s technical and economic feasibility.
Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said the four submissions demonstrate “tangible market interest” in the opportunity and form part of Malta’s wider vision for a more secure, sustainable and diversified power system.
The proposed connection could give Malta access to North Africa’s significant solar and wind resources, helping diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on individual sources or supply routes.
Interconnect Malta said the project could also support Malta’s decarbonisation targets, strengthen energy resilience and enhance the country’s strategic position between North Africa and Southern Europe.
The initiative is aligned with the Government’s Malta’s Energy Shift document, which outlines ambitions to strengthen energy cooperation across the Mediterranean and develop interconnections linking North Africa with Southern Europe.
Interconnect Malta Divisional Manager Alexandra Meli said the submissions would provide valuable technical, commercial and financial information on the proposed solutions.
The evaluation will examine generation arrangements, transmission infrastructure, delivery models, indicative costs, implementation timelines and technical risks.
Interconnect Malta also plans to meet the participating economic operators to allow them to explain their proposals in greater detail and provide clarifications during the assessment process.
The findings will provide evidence to support future Government decisions on Malta’s energy policy.
