ROME (ITALPRESS) – A series of safety measures to protect players in an increasingly congested calendar. FIFPRO, the International Federation of Professional Footballers, has published a study to identify “safety standards based on the considered and independent opinions of medical and performance experts working in professional football and understanding the mental and physical stress to which players are subjected”, as stated by Prof. Dr. Vincent Gouttebarge, FIFPRO’s medical director.
“If we all agree that health comes first, then we should take steps to implement these safety measures”, he added. The document calls for a four-week summer break between seasons, two of which are completely free, with a one-week break also planned mid-season. Among the points also the request for a mandatory one-day rest per week. Fifpro also states that “when planning the calendar, it is appropriate to take into account the increasing number of trips, which can cause jet lag and fatigue”. Specific guarantees were also requested to protect youth footballers.
