Domestic league matches played abroad, FIFA is working on a protocol

LONDON (ENGLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Serie A attempted this year, obtaining UEFA’s approval—albeit reluctantly—but the plan to bring Milan-Como to Perth ultimately fell through. But things could change in the future. According to the Guardian, FIFA is reportedly working on a clearer but also more rigorous protocol that would allow leagues to move one league match per season abroad.

On the other hand, a country could host up to five seasonal matches from other leagues. Zurich’s goal is to regulate an often thorny and debated issue by clarifying roles and conditions. Any request to move a league match abroad would thus be considered if all parties involved agree and the federations and confederations concerned approve. FIFA would, however, reserve a veto right, which it could exercise if it deems the well-being of the players to be at risk or if the host country’s league would be affected. Finally, guarantees would be required regarding the redistribution of revenue and compensation for fans unable to follow the teams abroad.
