ISTANBUL (TURKEY) (ITALPRESS) – The Turkish Football Federation has taken its first steps following the betting scandal: 149 referees and assistant referees have been suspended for placing bets on football matches.
The suspensions range from eight to twelve months, and investigations are ongoing into at least three other match officials. Among those punished is Zorbay Kuçuk, the third-highest-paid referee in last season’s Turkish top flight. According to the Federation’s investigation, based on inquiries conducted in Istanbul, out of a total of 571 referees, 371 have betting accounts and 152 are active bettors.
