NAPLES (ITALPRESS) – Dries Mertens has decided: it’s time to say enough with playing football. At 38, the Belgian striker, fresh from his experience at Galatasaray, will hang up his boots.
Mertens, who last June 6, when he was awarded honorary citizenship of Naples, had not yet committed himself to the future, almost involuntarily announced his retirement in a video message on social media addressed to Marek Hamsik: “I can’t wait to play my last match with you. I’ve stopped playing football but I’ll put my boots on one last time for you. You’ll always be my captain, the best I’ve ever played with. Greetings from Naples”.
The all-time top scorer with the Neapolitan shirt (148 goals in nine seasons, from 2013 to 2022), Mertens should therefore take part in Hamsik’s farewell match scheduled for July 5 in Bratislava.
