VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A new hearing in the trial for the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was held today in Valletta. Today’s hearing marked the start of a new phase of the trial, with prosecution witnesses focusing on the investigation and the evidence gathered by the police.

According to local press reports, new evidence emerged in court today calling into question the alleged relationship between former Chief of Staff of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Keith Schembri, and businessman Yorgen Fenech, a defendant in the trial.

Court-appointed experts began presenting evidence related to the investigation after alleged intermediary Melvin Theuma, who confessed, concluded his lengthy testimony. Theuma had already described the links between Fenech and Schembri, also referring to information that was allegedly passed between the two. Fenech himself had previously stated in court that Schembri kept him informed of developments in the murder investigation, including the alleged fact that his phone was being tapped. Fenech also claimed that Schembri had provided him with details regarding Theuma’s presidential pardon request.

The relationship between the two men has been repeatedly examined during the proceedings relating to Caruana Galizia’s murder. Fenech is charged with complicity in Caruana Galizia’s murder and being part of a criminal conspiracy to commit the murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
