Malta registered the highest increase in greenhouse gas emissions among European Union member states over the past decade, according to new estimates released by Eurostat.
The EU statistical agency said Malta’s emissions rose by an estimated 169.4% between 2015 and 2025, making it one of only four countries to record an increase during the period.
Cyprus reported a rise of 10.7%, followed by Lithuania with 9.5% and Romania with 5.4%.
Across the EU, greenhouse gas emissions from economic activities and households were estimated at 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2025, down 17.2% from 2015 levels.
Eurostat said emissions declined in 23 member states, with the sharpest reductions recorded in Estonia, Finland and Germany.
The figures were published days after another European environmental assessment raised concerns over Malta’s marine water quality.
