RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – The European Union supports the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as a basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara. This was reported by the Moroccan news agency MAP, which specified that the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, was on a working visit to Rabat.
Kallas emphasized that “genuine autonomy could represent one of the most realistic solutions” for reaching a final political solution to the dispute. She also called on all parties to participate in negotiations “without preconditions and on the basis of the autonomy plan presented by Morocco.”
This position, approved by the 27 EU member states, was formalized in a joint communiqué adopted following the meeting between Kallas and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. In the document, the EU also welcomed Morocco’s willingness to clarify the modalities for implementing autonomy within its sovereignty.
Brussels also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which supports the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to relaunch the political process, building on Morocco’s autonomy initiative. According to some observers, the European position represents an important political signal ahead of the upcoming discussions at the UN Security Council and is part of a growing international momentum in favor of a solution based on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
