Malta re-elected to IMO Council, citing strong global support

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has been re-elected to Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council during the 34th IMO Assembly in London, securing what the Transport Ministry described as “an excellent voting result” among candidate countries.

The ministry said the outcome strengthens Malta’s standing as a global maritime leader and reflects the trust placed in the country by the IMO’s 176 member states.

Minister for Transport Chris Bonett welcomed the result, calling Malta “a maritime nation” whose re-election confirms international recognition of its role as Europe’s largest ship registry and the world’s sixth-largest merchant fleet.

Bonett said the vote endorses the government’s maritime vision, including efforts to support the transition to net-zero emissions, improve seafarer training in developing states, and contribute to global maritime policy.

A renewed seat on the council will allow Malta to promote responsible shipping practices and reinforce its position as the Mediterranean’s leading maritime hub.

During the Assembly, Malta also announced a financial contribution to the IMO’s technical training fund, reaffirming its commitment to capacity building in developing maritime nations.

Malta has been elected to the IMO Council for 15 consecutive terms since joining the organisation in 1966.
