VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta will be sending 250 tonnes of flour to Gaza in the coming weeks as part of its ongoing humanitarian aid efforts, the Foreign Ministry announced.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ian Borg visited the Marsa flour mills, where 10,000 sacks of flour are being prepared for shipment. The first consignment is expected to leave Malta Freeport next week, destined for Limassol, Cyprus, before reaching Gaza. The aid will be distributed by the international NGO World Central Kitchen.
The operation is a joint effort involving the Government of Cyprus and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
Borg emphasized the importance of delivering basic essentials such as flour, which is less likely to face logistical or political barriers. “Hunger must never be a weapon of war,” he said, urging the international community to ensure aid reaches those in need.
Since 2023, Gaza has faced a deepening humanitarian crisis, worsened by disrupted aid flows and ongoing conflict following the October 7 Hamas attacks.
Malta has provided over €1.1 million in humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people over the past five years. Contributions include financial support to UNRWA, UNICEF, and other NGOs, as well as scholarships for Palestinian students at the University of Malta.
With this latest shipment, Malta’s aid to Palestine in 2025 will total approximately €350,000. Borg reiterated Malta’s call for an end to hostilities and the release of hostages, stressing that international cooperation is vital for lasting peace.
